Use your forensic techniques to solve the crime of the missing frogs from the biology classroom. Four possible suspects have been identified by the authorities. Use fingerprints, hair examination, and chemical analysis of ink by Thin-Layer Chromatography to help determine the most likely culprit. This activity includes a teacher’s manual, student guide, and analysis copy-masters. Materials include one bottle of fingerprinting powder, six fingerprinting brushes, six acetate sheets, one ink pad, six hand magnifiers, six forceps, four different brands of felt tip markers, one bottle of chromatography solvent, six silica gel chromatography sheets, one package capillary tubes, five self-sealing evidence envelopes, one box microscope slides, and one box of coverslips. Materials needed: chromatography chambers (500 mL beakers), test tubes, aluminum foil, adhesive tape, and light microscope. Enough material for 6 groups. Grades 6-12.
