Scientists have classified and keyed living and nonliving things for hundreds of years. Chemists have their periodic table of the elements and biologists have produced keys by putting living things into categories according to similar traits. With this kit, students work with eight illustrated “specimen” cards and two types of dichotomous keys (an indented and non-indented numerical version). They will identify each “specimen” to an imaginary genus and species, and some to a variety. The students first observe specific physical characteristics of the specimens, then sort or classify those with similar characteristics. Because the student must record letters or numbers (depending on their pf key), the teacher is able to evaluate the student’s ability to read science. Students must also draw two “specimens” not included in the sample, basing their illustrations on descriptions in the key. The teaching of reading and observation skills in science are greatly enhanced by this activity. This is a stimulating, challenging, fun, and very worthwhile activity. Kit is designed for 30 students working individually or in teams. Kit is reusable.
